Startup Weekend is a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 1800 past events in 120 countries around the world in 2014.

The non-profit organization is headquartered in Seattle, Washington but Startup Weekend organizers and facilitators can be found in over 200 cities around the world. From Mongolia to South Africa to London to Brazil, people around the globe are coming together for weekend long workshops to pitch ideas, form teams, and start companies.

All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.

Whether entrepreneurs found companies, find a cofounder, meet someone new, or learn a skill far outside their usual 9-to-5, everyone is guaranteed to leave the event better prepared to navigate the chaotic but fun world of startups. Vova Soroka

Vladimir (Vova) Soroka is a Leader, Global Technology Unit (GTU). GTU is working with many Israeli ISVs to help them succeed in the marketplace by collaborating with IBM across the board. Prior to leading the GTU Mr. Soroka was a Senior Manager, Collaboration Technologies, at IBM Research - Haifa. In this job he was managing a department dealing with wide range of social and collaborative tools. Mr. Soroka is author of more than 15 journal and conference papers, and holds 19 patents. He is also serving as IBM Master Inventor.

Before joining IBM, Vova worked in few Israeli startups, being one of the first Internet developers in Israel. He was part of the teams building first Israeli Internet sites, and then was a lead developer for Internet based fax server. He is holding B.Sc. in Computer
Science from the Technion, Israeli Institute of Technology and MA in Communication from University of Haifa. He is active in both academic and professional communities world wide in the area of Human Computer Interaction and Computer Supported Collaborative Work.

Ofer Lavi

Mr. Lavi is a Research Staff Member in the Machine Learning Technologies Group at IBM Research, Haifa.
He received his B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the Hebrew University in 2001, and his M.Sc. in Computer Science from Tel Aviv University in 2010, conducting research in the field of bioinformatics.
Ofer started his way as an entrepreneur, co-founded and served as the CTO of IntelliGate, a startup company in the fields of machine learning and natural language processing. He has joined IBM's Haifa Research Lab at 2010, focusing on application of unsupervised learning to problems of anomaly detection.
